Childhood is the most beautiful of all life’s seasons.

Thinking about writing on my childhood memories took me to the wonderful years of my life. When I close my eyes and travel down to my land of childhood, it is complete bliss. The days were filled with enjoyment, playfulness and above all innocence. Childhood recollections are always sweet and full of nostalgic moments.
Times have changed and so has the way of living. Childhood then was antithetical. Kids nowadays spend most of their time on tablets, play stations and television cartoons. In worst case, they hardly have time to think of “play” beyond homework and after school classes while us, their yester generation cherishes our vigorous outdoor plays. Not to blame them alone, we too are unknowingly refraining them from those funs in the name of pollution, dust, safety and the insecurities & inhibitions list goes on.

My childhood days were filled with enthusiastic, vibrant and sparking moments. We moved to our city’s first ever residential colony in the early 90’s (I was in seventh standard). “Parsn Srishti” is a beautifully landscaped colony on a total area of 1, 40,000 sq.ft hosting over 300 houses. Now you can imagine the naughty heads it would have had!
We were a group of 30 or so with ages ranging from 4 to 15. We used to play variety of games starting from running and catching, hide n seek, seven stones. We even had cycle races, as the colony has 3 parallel roads and 2 horizontal ones. Though it was located on the national highway, it was well compounded with round about security guards on the gates. so, loitering around was not a safety issue We had new games to play every day and there was not even single boring moment for us.
Most of my evenings were spent out playing on the streets and most of us would be wandering on until the street lights came on. Whether it was a big gang chasing each other around the apartment, playing on the small park area or simply dawdling around, we always found some way to entertain ourselves. I don’t remember uttering the word’ boring’ during my childhood. Be it lying, cheating, teaming, throwing, catching, fighting, bonding, sharing, helping – playing out on the streets was fun.
No paly station, android/ simulation game can come near to the fun, entertainment and satisfaction that outdoor games provide. Definitely, “playing outdoors” is that one thing from my childhood that I would wish for my children. I think they are missing the fun and enjoyment that we had.
